Growing for Gold

Northern Health is committed to creating breastfeeding friendly environments across the north. The Growing for Gold program aligns with this commitment by promoting businesses and facilities that support breastfeeding in their locations. To take part in the program, businesses and facilities can request, receive, and proudly display the Growing for Gold decal in their window, helping create health and business for life.

Why should everyone support breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding – a normal and natural way for mothers to feed their babies – is the healthiest and most affordable option available for families and the community.

Lowers risk of certain diseases, cancers, allergies, helps with brain development, and attachment.

Promotes health and bonding with baby.

Saves over $1000 per year in food costs.

Lowers health care costs.

Creates no additional waste.

Along with its health benefits, breastfeeding is a right that is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms and the British Columbia Human Rights Code.

Why should you request the Growing for Gold decal?

Despite breastfeeding’s health benefits and legal protection, mothers are frequently discriminated against when breastfeeding in public. By displaying the Growing for Gold decal in your business’s or facility’s window, you are showing your welcoming attitude and support for breastfeeding. As well as receiving additional attention from pedestrians due to the decal, your location will be featured on Northern Health’s list of breastfeeding friendly locations (right column). This list will be regularly promoted through our Facebook and Twitter feeds, helping to make your location a destination for young families today and into the future.
