Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii General Hospital

The people of the Village of Queen Charlotte and the staff and physicians of Northern Health are proud to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for a tour of the new hospital on Friday, September 30, 2016.

Project Overview

The Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital Replacement project was officially announced by the Province of B.C. on April 12, 2012 in the Village of Queen Charlotte. This project is an important investment for families and future generations in the Village of Queen Charlotte and the surrounding communities in the delivery of quality, sustainable health care services.

Construction of the new facility began in the summer of 2013, and about 190 direct jobs were created during construction. The hospital is expected to open during fall 2016.

The total value of the facility is $50 million dollars, with the costs shared between the Province and the North West Regional Hospital District. The project is follows a design-build approach, which bring innovation to the process by integrating the design and construction teams together. Bouygues Building Canada and Perkins & Will are collaboratively building the new hospital. For more information on the procurement process, please visit the project site on partnershipsbc.ca.

The new hospital follows Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, and maximizes the use of wood where feasible in keeping with the Province’s Wood First Act.

This project will provide new and expanded patient care services for the region and will support Northern Health in meeting demand projections for health care services. The existing Queen Charlotte General Hospital was built in 1950; it is too costly to refurbish this building.
